Counties Energy, which marked its 100th anniversary in 2025, were involved in the very first Annual Connection event back in 2002, with teams competing on multiple occasions since.
CEO Judy Nicholl says hosting this year’s event at Pukekohe Showgrounds was an unmissable opportunity for Counties Energy to support the industry and showcase the work it does every day, within the local community and across the country.
“Hosting it on our own patch is our way of celebrating the skill and grit our teams bring to work every day, while helping the wider industry become stronger and more resilient together.”
Beyond the competition a highlight of Annual Connection is seeing the synergy on the field, she adds. “It’s inspiring to see crews bring out the best in one another, showcasing the pride, wide range of skills and commitment to safe work practices that define the industry. The second the tools are down, that competitive spirit turns into genuine camaraderie, and it’s that chance to reconnect with the wider industry whānau that makes the event so special.”
As well as showcasing the knowledge and expertise of New Zealand Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) to the wider community, the three days of competition at Annual Connection “bring training to life”, Nicholl says.
“The competitions reflect the incredible skill and strong safety focus required to keep the power flowing for our communities. It demonstrates that a well-trained, confident workforce is the foundation of a reliable and resilient energy network.
“Events like Annual Connection are important because they provide our communities with a behind-the-scenes look at the incredible teamwork required to keep the power flowing safely and reliably. They also bring together a wide range of skills and experience, creating a space to share knowledge that strengthens our industry, while showing the next generation that this is a career with real purpose and heart.”
