CABLE JOINTER COMPETITION
Every year as part of Annual Connection, the country’s cable jointers compete in a series
of skills-based activities, judged by a panel of experts drawn from within New Zealand’s electricity supply industry (ESI).
Over the three days of Annual Connection each cable jointer completes eight different competition tasks designed to test every aspect of being a cable jointer, from their
technical expertise, their on-the-job problem-solving skills, health and safety practices,
and electrical theory.
The winning cable jointer is announced as part of the Connexis Excellence Awards
held on the final night of Annual Connection each year.
As well as a chance to show off their incredible skills and expertise, Annual Connection offers New Zealand’s cable jointers a chance to connect with each other, share
experiences and learn from each other.
It offers a unique opportunity to show off the work they do to keep New Zealand connected, work that often goes unseen and under-appreciated in remote areas.
The competition is also a chance for the industry as a whole to showcase just how skilled, varied and in demand careers in the ESI really are.
In 2025, the inaugural Cable Joiner Trainee Competition was held on Wednesday, where three competitors took on three tasks over the day. Under the watchful eye of our experienced judges, they competed in the 11KV Repair Joint, Spiking Gun and Electrical Theory tasks.
After a tough battle, Tia Bella Fasi from EA Networks was crowned the winner.
